There is something different about Quentin Coleman.
Maybe it’s the résumé he built before ever arriving in Champaign. Maybe it’s the confidence that comes with spending his high school career playing a central role on championship teams. Or maybe, it’s simply the fact that, despite being an incoming freshman, Coleman arrives at Illinois with the kind of expectations usually reserved for players who have already spent several years in college basketball.

The 6-foot-4 guard from St. Louis isn’t just another talented piece joining Brad Underwood’s roster. He is a five-star recruit who has already experienced what it means to be the focal point of a winning team, and he enters Illinois after a high school career defined by production, competition and championships.
Now, the challenge is different.
Coleman is stepping into a program that just reached the Final Four, surrounded by returning players who have already established themselves at the college level. He doesn’t need to arrive in Champaign and immediately become the face of the program.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an opportunity waiting for him.

In fact, the combination of Coleman’s talent and Illinois’ existing roster could make his freshman season particularly interesting.
It’s difficult to look at Coleman’s high school career and separate his individual success from the winning that came with it.
As a senior at Principia School in Missouri, Coleman averaged 23.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.7 steals per game while shooting 64 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. Those numbers alone would be enough to establish him as one of the more productive players in his class.

But the bigger story is what those numbers helped Principia accomplish.
