The college basketball world was hit with heartbreaking news Tuesday as ESPN analyst Chris Spatola died unexpectedly at age 47. Spatola’s death quickly brought an outpouring of grief from broadcasters, coaches, and others across the basketball world.
Basketball World Mourns ESPN’s College Basketball Analyst Chris Spatola
Spatola passed away Monday, ESPN announced, leaving behind a career that stretched from Army basketball and military service to the Duke coaching staff and ESPN’s college basketball broadcasts.

“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” the network said in a statement, commemorating Spatola’s impact both on and off the basketball court.
“He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Spatola’s colleagues, coaches, and fellow broadcasters took to social media to remember him and offer prayers to his family.

“Just devastating news,” NCAA analyst Andy Katz wrote, remembering Spatola as “a great teammate on every broadcast” and sending prayers to everyone who knew and loved him.
Spatola was much more than a familiar voice on television. He was a four-year starter for the Army Black Knights, where he led the team in scoring in three seasons and finished his college career with 1,543 points, putting him among the program’s top 10 scorers.
ESPN NBA analyst Bobby Marks also remembered Spatola’s character and service, writing, “Just terrible news. Chris was terrific man who served our country.”
That part of Spatola’s life came before his broadcasting career. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 2002, he spent five years on active duty as a battery commander and an executive officer and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was…
