Former basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski’s son-in-law, Chris Spatola, passed away on Monday at the age of 47. ESPN released a statement regarding the college basketball analyst’s passing.

“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” the statement read. “He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”

The college basketball world took to social media to mourn Chris Spatola’s unexpected death.

Chris Spatola played college basketball for the Army Black Knights just like his father-in-law, Mike Krzyzewski. After his four-year collegiate stint (1998-2002), he joined the Military and served during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his exceptional combat contributions.

Following his return, Krzyzewski hired him as part of his Duke coaching staff. He was a part of the program from 2007 to 2012, winning four ACC Tournament titles and the 2010 national championship. He married Krzyzewski’s daughter, Jamie, in 2004, and they have three children together.

In 2015, Spatola transitioned into broadcasting and joined ESPN. He served as a college basketball analyst on the network and on SiriusXM for the past decade.
