After making its first Final Four appearance in 21 years, Illinois enters the 2026-27 season with expectations that are significantly higher than they were a year ago. The Illini return five rotation players from last season’s team while adding a strong recruiting class and an impact transfer, giving Brad Underwood a roster capable of competing with some of the best teams in the country.
The schedule will give Illinois plenty of opportunities to prove that.

Rather than easing into the season, Illinois faces a demanding nonconference slate before beginning what should be another grueling Big Ten campaign. There are marquee road games, neutral-site matchups and several stretches where the Illini will have little time to recover between difficult opponents.
Illinois opens the season at home against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 2 before hosting Penn three days later. Those games should allow the Illini to establish their rotation and build some early chemistry, but the schedule quickly becomes much more demanding.
On Nov. 10, Illinois travels to Texas Tech before heading to Durham one week later to face Duke.

The Duke game immediately stands out as one of the most important games of the nonconference season. Playing at Cameron Indoor Stadium is difficult under any circumstances, and it will give Illinois an early opportunity to see how its roster responds to a hostile environment against one of the country’s premier programs.
After returning home for games against Sam Houston, Eastern Illinois, Winthrop and Western Kentucky, Illinois gets another major test when UConn comes to Chicago on Dec. 4.
That matchup carries additional significance after Illinois and UConn met in last season’s Final Four. It should provide an early measuring stick for a team that will have to prove its success last season was the beginning of something bigger rather than an isolated breakthrough.
