Warriors second-round pick Lajae Jones signs with Italian team

After the Golden State Warriors decided to sign undrafted free agent big man Graham Ike to fill the final two-way spot on the squad, news shortly followed of Dubs second-round pick Lajae Jones opting to start his post-college career internationally. Jones has agreed to a one-year deal with Pallacanestro Trieste of Lega Basket Serie A (the most prestigious basketball league in Italy). The Warriors will retain Jones’ rights.

It’s clear from the press release and surrounding reporting that Jones decision to head abroad was made in tandem with the Warriors, who clearly thought Ike was a better fit for the team this season. Pallacanestro Trieste has some notable ties to Golden State. Jones will now be teammates with former Warriors rotation player Juan Toscano-Anderson.

“His selection in June’s NBA draft is proof of his hard work, dedication and immense basketball potential,” Trieste general manager Michael Arcieri said in a press release attached to the signing. “His decision to proudly wear the Trieste jersey and continue his basketball dream and development with us is proof of the great trust he has in our team, our staff, our fans and the potential of a truly special 2026-27 season. Our collaboration throughout the season with the Golden State Warriors’ staff regarding Lajae’s development represents an incredibly exciting opportunity for our staff and organization.”

The Warriors clearly still believe Jones can be a helpful contributor for the team long-term. It’s worth noting that wing Malevy Leons is already on a two-way deal, but will not be two-way eligible next season. It seems reasonable to believe Golden State’s front office is optimistic that Jones can develop more abroad and replace Leons’ two-way spot next year. It’s also worth noting the Dubs still could trade the rights to Jones in a trade.
