Understanding the difference between Yahoo’s three formats in fantasy basketball
First, let’s look at how each format differs from the others to provide a quick draft strategy for each league. The players you might target differ drastically depending on whether you’re playing in nine-category, standard points or high-score leagues, especially as your draft progresses.
9-Category leagues
Yahoo’s traditional 9-category format emphasizes roster versatility, and from a management standpoint, it can be the most complex. It uses field-goal percentage, free-throw percentage, 3-pointers made, points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and turnovers. Instead of combining everything into one fantasy score, managers compete separately in each category.

That means a particular player can be extremely valuable while contributing little in certain areas, while another can hurt a roster despite posting impressive counting stats because of poor percentages or excessive turnovers. It also introduces punting, where managers intentionally sacrifice one or more categories to become stronger elsewhere.
