Doc Rivers returns to broadcast booth, joins NBC ahead of 2026-27 NBA season

Over his 40 seasons of NBA experience, Hall of Famer Doc Rivers has learned a thing or two about the game. Because of that, Rivers will hop back into the broadcast booth for the 2026-27 NBA season, joining NBC as a basketball analyst, according to NBCSports.com.

Rivers confirmed the news in a statement, saying he was “excited to be back.”

“I loved playing the game, I loved coaching it, and I’ve always loved talking about it,” Rivers said. “I have great memories working with NBC, and I’m excited to be back and share my perspective alongside such a talented team. This season should be a lot of fun. I can’t wait.”

The 64-year-old Rivers has plenty of experience in the realm. After his 13-year playing career ended, Rivers called games for TNT before becoming a coach with the Orlando Magic. He then turned back to broadcasting after the Magic fired him in 2003, joining ESPN/ABC until his next coaching opportunity opened up. He did the same thing in 2023 before accepting the Milwaukee Bucks’ head-coaching job.

Rivers lasted two-plus seasons as the Bucks’ coach before he stepped down in April.

Rivers has plenty of experience from which to pull over his many, many years in professional basketball. After being a second-round pick in the 1983 NBA Draft, Rivers went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA, making one All-Star team.

He quickly turned to coaching once his career was over, spending time with the Magic, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and Bucks over his coaching career.

Of that group, Rivers is most known for his tenure with the Celtics, where he helped lead the team to the 2007-08 championship. While he didn’t win titles with the Clippers or 76ers, he posted better winning percentages with both teams.

Over his coaching career, Rivers amassed an astounding 1,194 wins, good for sixth all-time. Because of that, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as part of its 2026 class.

It’s unclear how long Rivers will stick in the broadcasting realm this time around. Given his experience, Rivers could once again find himself a strong candidate for NBA job openings…
