UNC-Arkansas Lands Prime ESPN Window for 2026 ACC/SEC Challenge

North Carolina’s December showdown with Arkansas now has its place in the national spotlight.

ESPN announced Monday that the Tar Heels will host the Razorbacks at 7:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Dec. 1, as part of the fourth annual ACC/SEC Challenge. The game will air on ESPN and serve as the opening game of a marquee doubleheader, followed by Duke’s trip to Florida at 9:30 p.m. ET.

The matchup was originally announced in June, but the television designation and tip time add even more significance to what already projects as one of North Carolina’s biggest non-conference games of Michael Malone’s first season in Chapel Hill.

Arkansas sits at No. 10 in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25, one of 12 teams participating in the Challenge included in those rankings. The two-day event includes several other high-profile games, including Duke at Florida, Kentucky at Virginia and Alabama at Miami.

For UNC, the Challenge has been a relatively successful event despite the ACC’s struggles as a whole.

Carolina is 2-1 through the first three editions. The Tar Heels opened the series with a memorable 100-92 home victory over No. 10 Tennessee in 2023. One year later, Alabama came into the Smith Center and handed UNC a 94-79 loss. Carolina responded last season with arguably its best Challenge victory yet, going into Rupp Arena and defeating Kentucky 67-64.

That gives the Tar Heels a chance to improve to 3-1 in the event when Arkansas comes to town.

The ACC, meanwhile, would love to reverse the direction of the overall competition.

The inaugural 2023 Challenge finished in a 7-7 tie. The SEC then dominated the 2024 edition by a 14-2 margin before winning again in 2025, 9-7. Through three seasons, the SEC holds a 30-16 advantage in individual men’s games, with two Challenge victories and one tie.
