Phoenix Suns reportedly agree to sign center Duop Reath to one-year deal

With center Mark Williams out for likely the first half of the season following surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the Suns have gone out and added depth.

Phoenix has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with center Duop Reath, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports. This is a one-year, veteran minimum deal and the only question is whether it is fully guaranteed or not (likely not).

Reath, 30, spent his first three seasons in Portland and showed flashes of potential, but his minutes got squeezed by the emergence of Donovan Clingan and the franchise’s priority to develop Yang Hansen. Reath saw limited run last season and then was out after January due to foot surgery.

Reath will get his chance in Phoenix but has to earn minutes behind third-year big man Oso Ighodaro plus Khaman Maluach, who showed potential last season and then stood out at Summer League, averaging 19.5 points and 12.8 rebounds a game.

Phoenix already has 15 standard contracts on the roster heading into camp, so adding Reath — who almost certainly starts the season with the team — means someone has to go. Jamaree Bouyea and Haywood Highsmith are both on non-guaranteed contracts, making one of them the most likely to be shown the door.
