Cavaliers reportedly promoting Brandon Weems to become new GM

Brandon Weems is reportedly being promoted to general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The 40-year-old Weems will work under team president Koby Altman. He will take over the role after Mike Gansey left in May to become the Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations.

Weems originally joined the Cavaliers in 2015 as a scout and worked his way up in the organization having also served as director of scouting, senior director of player personnel and assistant general manager.

A high school teammate of LeBron James, Weems worked as an assistant coach for two seasons at Oakland University before joining the Cavaliers in 2015. His main responsibilities were working with the team’s guards and scouting duties.

The Cavaliers have not missed the playoffs since 2022 and reached the Eastern Conference finals last season before being swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks. This offseason they re-signed James Harden, added Peyton Watson, Thomas Bryant and Mario Hezonja, and extended Donovan Mitchell.
