Brandon Weems promoted by Cavaliers to general manager

Brandon Weems has been promoted to general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team announced on Friday.

“Brandon has earned this opportunity through more than a decade of exceptional work with the Cavaliers and by consistently demonstrating elite judgment and the expertise required to help lead our basketball operations,” said President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman in a statement. “He has been instrumental in our player evaluation and roster-building processes, has a deep understanding of our culture, and has grown into a tremendous leader.”

The 40-year-old Weems will work under Altman. He will take over the role after Mike Gansey left in May to become the Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations.

Weems originally joined the Cavaliers in 2015 as a scout and worked his way up in the organization having also served as director of scouting, senior director of player personnel and assistant general manager.

A high school teammate of LeBron James, Weems worked as an assistant coach for two seasons at Oakland University before joining the Cavaliers in 2015. His main responsibilities were working with the team’s guards and scouting duties.

The Cavaliers have not missed the playoffs since 2022 and reached the Eastern Conference finals last season before being swept by the eventual champion New York Knicks. This offseason they re-signed James Harden, added Peyton Watson, Thomas Bryant and Mario Hezonja, and extended Donovan Mitchell.
