Knicks suspend ticket sales, refund fans after error led to massive increase: ‘Our intention was never to overcharge’

The New York Knicks are doing the right thing for their fans. The team suspended all ticket sales Thursday after a “mistake in [its] pricing” led to individual tickets being sold at a much higher price than the team intended.

Fans who already purchased tickets to games will be refunded the difference once the team restarts ticket sales with the correct prices.

The Knicks’ full statement read:

“We are pausing Knicks individual ticket sales due a mistake in our pricing. We are rolling back to last year’s prices plus an average increase of 12%. We will restart sales with new prices shortly, and anyone who already purchased individual tickets will be refunded the difference. Our intention was never to overcharge our loyal fans, and we thank everyone for their support of the Knicks and their patience as we get this right.”

The Knicks drew ire Wednesday, when the team originally put tickets on sale. Some were quick to call out the cost of individual tickets. On opening night — when the Knicks raise the championship banner — the cheapest ticket the team put up for sale Wednesday was $1,000. Those were, predictably, for the worst seats in the house.

The team’s initial, erroneous ticket costs were the result of an “internal error,” the New York Post reported Thursday. It’s unclear exactly what led to those ticket prices being released Wednesday.

The New York Post also noted that the team-intended 12 percent ticket increase will apply to both individual ticket purchases and season-ticket holders.

The Knicks have plenty to celebrate during the 2026-27 NBA season. The franchise is coming off its first championship since 1973. That title brought increased attention and stardom to the team, with star guard Jalen Brunson hosting “Saturday Night Live” on Sept. 26. Brunson will, undoubtedly, get the loudest cheers when his name is announced in front of Knicks fans on opening night.

While the team will lower ticket prices shortly, it will still cost a pretty penny to attend a Knicks game this season. Ticket prices at Madison Square Garden were already high prior to the team’s first championship in over 50…
