Kings agree to contract with former 2014 NBA Draft lottery pick, per agent originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The Kings continue to add talent, and another first round pick is set to join the mix.

Sacramento and Elfrid Payton have agreed to a contract, Hoops Hype’s Michael Scotto reported Wednesday, citing Darrell Comer of CSE Talent. Payton will compete for a roster spot during training camp and the preseason, per Scotto.
Payton, the No. 10 overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, last played for the New Orleans Pelicans and the Charlotte Hornets during the 2024-25 season where he averaged 3.5 points, 6.9 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 24 total games.
Before that campaign, Payton spent two seasons away from the NBA, playing in Puerto Rico and the NBA G League. Payton led the G League in assists in 2023-24 as an All-NBA G League Third Team selection.

After three standout seasons for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, Payton was drafted by the Orlando Magic and enjoyed a productive rookie campaign, averaging 8.9 points and 6.5 assists. He was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and became a key player for the Magic from then on.
Payton’s final season with the Magic was in 2017-18 where he averaged 13 points and 6.3 assists before he was dealt to the Phoenix Suns ahead of that season’s NBA trade deadline. The following season, he signed with the Pelicans and spent all of the 2018-19 campaign in his hometown. Payton also has played for the New York Knicks.
The Kings are coming off of another disappointing season, missing the NBA playoffs with a 22-60 record. But the hope is that the franchise’s productive offseason will lead to their new additions stepping up and bringing the team back to NBA relevance.
