Your Philadelphia 76ers will have a familiar voice booming inside Xfinity Mobile Arena this year, even though he planned to retire after last season.

That’s because, on Wednesday, the team announced that longtime Sixers announcer Matt Cord has decided to return for one more season.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return to the mic as PA announcer for 76ers for one more season,” Cord said in a statement announcing his return from a — very brief — retirement. “Serving in this role for the past 28 years has been a dream come true, and I have been fortunate to witness so many memorable moments from the best seat in the house. This is going to be a special year, and I can’t wait to be back at Xfinity Mobile Arena with you all. Let’s go, 76ers!”

Perhaps the additions of Jaylen Brown and NBA superstar LeBron James to the Sixers starting rotation helped prompt Cord’s return?

He didn’t say.

But, Cord did note that he still plans to retire from the team — once again — at the end of this upcoming season.

And, before then, he will work with the team to find his replacement through a tryout process that is expected to begin this winter.
