Paul George is well aware of how Boston Celtics fans feel about him essentially replacing Jaylen Brown as a result of the team’s shocking offseason trade with the Philadelphia 76ers.

On July 1, the NBA world was stunned as the C’s shipped Brown to their storied rival in exchange for George, two first-round draft picks, and two second-round picks. Boston’s move was heavily scrutinized and considered lopsided in Philly’s favor, largely because of George’s contract ($52.9M in 2026-27, $56.6M player option for 2027-28) and age (36). George has also missed significant time over the last few seasons due to injuries.

As for Brown, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP became one of Boston’s most beloved athletes during his 10 years in the city. He was a perennial All-Star for the C’s and a pillar in the community with numerous charitable contributions, including his 7uice Foundation.

The Celtics’ decision to part ways with Brown upset many within the fanbase. On Tuesday, George empathized with those who reacted negatively to the deal.

“Listen, I understand the circumstances. I understand how huge JB was not only for the organization, but here in the city,” George said during his introductory press conference with Boston. ” So, I didn’t take it personal. To be honest, they should have a relationship emotionally to that trade. But my job here is to kind of come into a great opportunity for me. Obviously, the last two years have been rough just with injuries. But for myself personally, I feel great again. I feel like I’ve turned that corner of dealing with injuries and now, kind of reestablishing myself from a physical standpoint again. And with that, I can carry it over to the court.

“Again, no personal feelings towards the initial — how it (was) received here in Boston. To be honest, it’s fair, but just one foot in front of the other. Hopefully, with how we start this year, they understand this is a new team and something that they can be proud of.”
