The Boston Celtics have reportedly signed former lottery pick Devin Carter to an Exhibit 10 deal, which will allow him to audition for the team at training camp. The question now: Can the 24-year-old guard play his way into a roster spot?

The Celtics currently have one open roster spot, but there’s also motivation to maintain financial flexibility as staying below the luxury tax for one more season would eliminate pesky repeater penalties after the season. Boston also has one open two-way roster spot, with only rookie wing Dillon Mitchell and second-year big man Amari Williams inked to three available slots.
Carter prepped at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire and played his final two college seasons at Providence before the Sacramento Kings selected him with the 13th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Sacramento traded Carter to Atlanta in June, and the roster-crunched Hawks waived Carter last week.
Carter checks a lot of boxes for what Boston likes in players, most notably a nearly 6-foot-9 wingspan for a 6-foot-2 player. He was tops in the 2024 combine in both max vertical and ¾-court sprint. Those physical tools allow him to excel as both a point-of-attack defender and as a rebounder.
Carter grabbed 13.9 percent of all available defensive rebounds during his floor time last season, ranking in the 96th percentile for his position. He also averaged 2.3 steals per 100 possessions and drew 0.8 offensive fouls per 100 possessions (both strong numbers for his position).

Boston’s guard depth chart is well stocked with Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, along with veteran offseason addition Mike Conley. But the Celtics clearly love versatile defenders who can guard multiple positions, and Carter plays bigger than his height.
Put Carter in an ecosystem where he can learn from Pritchard/White/Conley, even if on a two-way deal, and there’s potential to maximize a player that couldn’t carve out a home in Sacramento. Three years ago, the Celtics signed Neemias Queta after he was waived by the Kings and nurtured…
