Lance Leipold has come under fire after the Kansas Jayhawks’ loss to rivals, the Missouri Tigers, on Friday. During their season opener against the LIU Sharks last week, they secured a dominating 51-6 victory.

However, the Jayhawks struggled to find the same production against the Missouri Tigers. Despite an early lead, the offense fell short, giving coach Eliah Drinkwitz and his team the opening to secure a 38-21 victory.

After the game, fans on social media heavily criticized Lance Leipold for losing this Border War rivalry game.

Since taking over the Kansas Jayhawks in 2021, the team has faced the Missouri Tigers twice. Lance Leipold has now lost both games following Friday’s defeat at home. The previous loss came in Sept. 2025 when they lost 31-42 at Faurot Field.

Lance Leipold shares his thoughts on quarterback Isaiah Marshall’s performance after the 38-21 loss to Missouri

In the postgame press conference, Lance Leipold was asked to share his assessment of quarterback Isaiah Marshall’s performance.

The Kansas coach described the quarterback’s showcase as “inconsistent.”

“It was kind of inconsistent,” Leipold said. “I think he took a hit on his arm early in the game that might have affected him. He was really excited for this game. I think he was too hyped up or whatever.

“I just felt he wasn’t himself in some of the throws. He was uncharacteristically off in some of his throws behind guys. A little bit all over the place. … But there’s a young man just trying to make something happen. I know he’ll learn a lot from this game, and he’ll be a lot better from it.”

Isaiah Marshall has been a part of Kansas since 2024. He won the starting quarterback job this season. Against Missouri, he completed 13-of-30 passes for 168 yards, two TDs and two interceptions.
