Anonymous Coaches Have NSFW Answer on Why UNC’s Michael Malone Decision Was Perfect

Is it unfair to say that North Carolina head coach Michael Malone was by far the best hire of the college basketball cycle? I don’t think so, and if I had to make a prediction, I’d say he has the biggest impact on any roster in the short and long term, especially for teams that just added a new head coach.

At the same time, I do recognize that coaching in college basketball is a lot different than doing so in the NBA. Winning in the NBA is one thing, but winning recruiting battles and other factors in college basketball are a lot different than what we typically see.

With Malone being expected to have all the money he needs to ensure that he can win any recruiting battle that he truly wants, there’s reason to believe that he’s going to be in a good position to be an excellent head coach for a long time in North Carolina, if he doesn’t want to return to the NBA ranks.

We really shouldn’t be too surprised that he’s viewed as the best hire in all of college basketball this offseason. All Malone has done throughout his NBA career is win at a high level, and with the resources in North Carolina, that should continue.

“I don’t give a flying f-ck [about all the other candidates]. It ain’t even close. Mike Malone is the best hire by far. … The guy won an NBA championship,” an anonymous coach said, per CBS.

“Very difficult to argue against Malone given his track record and the similarities between college and pro basketball today. You cannot question his coaching acumen, and ‘recruiting’ is much more ‘roster building’ when you have UNC’s resources. Coach Malone has always gotten the most out of his teams. The old-school ‘can he recruit?’ question for NBA guys is moot here,” another anonymous coach said.

The interesting comment from the one anonymous coach here is the similarities between college and pro basketball.
