Timberwolves Avoid Second Apron Woes After Trading Josh Green For A Former First-Round Pick And A Veteran Guard

According to Shams Charania, ESPN’s senior NBA insider, the Minnesota Timberwolves have reportedly traded Josh Green and cash considerations to the Utah Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar.

The Timberwolves were expected to move Josh Green by either waiving him or trading him, as they were projected to be $2 million over the second apron threshold. This move brings back two expiring contracts (Williams’ contract has a team option in 2027-28) that could give the Timberwolves more cap flexibility.

This trade also gives the Timberwolves a young former first-round draft pick who could be a long-term prospect, plus a contract like John Konchar’s $6.16 million, which they are expected to waive and stretch.

“The Timberwolves are expected to keep Cody Williams, the No. 10 pick in 2024, and waive-and-stretch John Konchar, sources said. They found a home for Josh Green on a Jazz team that wanted an additional 3-and-D wing; moving his $14.7 million deal gives Minnesota the salary space to sign Jonathan Kuminga using the taxpayer midlevel exception,” wrote Shams Charania on X.

Josh Green is coming off the 2025-26 season averaging 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.8 assists while shooting 45.9% from the field and 42.0% from the field. He lost his rotation minutes last season with the Hornets before they traded him to the Timberwolves.

On that $14.7 million contract, he gives the Jazz a mid-sized contract that could help with trades. He becomes Utah’s third-highest-paid player behind Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen, and just ahead of Darryn Peterson.

Meanwhile, the former 10th overall pick from 2024, Cody Williams, was averaging 8.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 46.8% from the floor in 2025-26. He has the potential to be a solid bench contributor if he becomes more consistent. Or he could be a salary filler in another potential blockbuster trade that the Timberwolves could be planning.
