Jazz Make Win-Now Move in Trade With Timberwolves for Josh Green

The Cody Williams era with the Utah Jazz has officially come to an end.

On Friday night, the Jazz traded Williams and John Konchar to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Josh Green and cash considerations. For Utah, the deal represents an interesting pivot away from one of the organization’s recent lottery investments and is another clear signal that the Jazz are ready to push more chips in to be competitive this season.

You’re always going to want young players you can develop to keep a window of contention open further into the future, but this is a clear win-now move by Utah.

Green isn’t a star-level player by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s much more proven than Williams. He’s an established 3-and-D wing who’s experienced some ups and downs throughout his career, but he’s absolutely capable of being a rotation player for a team looking to make the playoffs this season.

Williams probably still has more upside, but he’s also not quite ready to consistently contribute on a nightly basis for a team with postseason aspirations. His shooting still hasn’t fully come around, and he’s got work to do physically to stack up against the level of athletes he’ll face every night in the NBA.

That’s something Minnesota can afford to be patient with as Williams continues his development.

Utah, meanwhile, is reshaping its roster around players who can contribute now. Green is still young in his own right at just 25 years old, meaning there’s still room for him to develop even though he’s significantly more established.

He’s never been a high-volume scorer, but he’s athletic, energetic and capable of making an impact on both ends of the floor without needing the ball in his hands. That’s exactly the type of player any playoff team would love to have coming off its bench.
