Former Hornets Wing Josh Green Traded Again After LaMelo Ball Deal

The Minnesota Timberwolves are trading Josh Green and cash to the Utah Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported, citing league sources.

Minnesota faced a Saturday deadline to waive Green and stretch the final year of his contract across three seasons, a step Charania had reported the Timberwolves were prepared to take if no trade came together. The team preferred a trade for a lower-salaried player.

Minnesota needed to shed roughly $3 million to complete Jonathan Kuminga’s two-year, $12.4 million contract, which starts at $6.1 million and carries a player option for the second season. The Timberwolves are hard-capped at the second apron after aggregating salaries in the LaMelo Ball trade.

Green will earn nearly $14.7 million in 2026-27, the last year of his three-year, $41 million extension with the Dallas Mavericks signed on Oct. 23, 2023. Williams is owed just over $6 million in the third year of his rookie contract, with a team option for 2027-28. Konchar’s deal ends after this season at about $6.16 million.

Charlotte acquired Green in July 2024, in the six-team trade that sent Klay Thompson to Dallas. The 18th overall pick in the 2020 draft, Green had spent his first four seasons with the Mavericks. He started 67 of the 68 games he played in his first season with the Charlotte Hornets, averaging 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 27.8 minutes. He shot 39.1% from three and averaged a career-high 1.1 steals.

Surgery on his left shoulder followed on June 20, 2025. Green, 25, came off the bench in all 58 of his appearances last season, averaging 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 15.7 minutes. He shot 42% from three and 89.3% from the free-throw line.

Charlotte traded Green and Ball to Minnesota in late June for Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029, and 2030, and second-round picks in 2029, 2032, and 2033.
