Postseason: After suffering the most embarrassing loss of the Big East tournament — falling to last place Georgetown in the quarterfinals after the Hoyas had already upset DePaul a day earlier, which is the second most embarrassing loss — Villanova still had a profile that was good enough for a #8 seed in the NCAA tournament, marking their first appearance in the dance since 2022. However, they fell apart late, giving up a 14-1 run in an 86-76 loss to #9 Utah State.
Notable Departures: Well, where do you want to start here? Duke Brennan came in as a one year guy after two years at Grand Canyon and a season at Arizona State before that. Devin Askew was actually on his sixth year of college thanks to starting in the 2020-21 season and picking up an entirely separate redshirt season along the way in his stops at Kentucky, Texas, Cal, and Long Beach State. Villanova was always going to lose those two. Brennan is the bigger loss since he averaged a double-double (12.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, plus two assists) and started in 32 appearances, but Askew’s not a nobody. He appeared in all 33 games even though he only started twice, and he averaged 23 minutes a game which is great for a sub. He shot over 40% behind the arc and averaged 9.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. For his role, he was pretty great, and so, that’s a pretty important loss even if it was expected. Those are the kinds of guys you love to have in the first year of a new coaching regime.
