WNBA reporter Roberta F. Rodrigues, who covers the league as a contributor for Forbes, announced her intentions to take a “small, temporary break” from women’s basketball coverage over the coming weeks in a post on social media.
While explaining her decision, Rodrigues cited the current tenor of conversation around the league, as well as harassment she has received from people in response to her coverage.

“I’m not defeated. I’m just tired. Tired from the harassment, the gaslight and the countless attempts to discredit me and my work simply because I am not afraid to name the problems,” Rodrigues wrote on Thursday.
“Seeing the current state of the WNBA, the agents that have been allowed to infiltrate what has been a safe space for the sake of ‘growing the game,’ the chokehold the league, teams, players and media are [in] because of a specific fan base, has completely taken away the joy of the game for me.”
Rodrigues noted that her intention was to resume regular coverage after the World Cup break. The WNBA will break from Aug. 31 through Sept. 17 so that international stars can play in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
In a previous post on her social media account, Rodrigues said that “Indiana Fever fans have found my phone number” and added that she had received harassing calls and texts.
Rodrigues’s decision to step away comes at a time when the conversation surrounding the WNBA is quite heated. After Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was quoted as being against transgender athletes competing in high school athletics, protests against and in support of her comments started taking place at games. Things have gotten to a point where Fox News has weighed in, and former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom is showing up to games for attention.
