Where UNC basketball lands in very early ESPN bracketology

Sports fans are gearing up for the 2026 college football season that begins this weekend, but we aren’t far away from college basketball starting either. In just a few months, the college basketball season will be here. The North Carolina Tar Heels are entering Year 1 of the Michael Malone era.

There are still many questions left to be answered for the Tar Heels. Right now, many believe the Tar Heels are at least a tournament team, and if they don’t make it, this season would be a huge disappointment.

In late August, Joe Lunardi of ESPN released his very early bracketology for the 2027 NCAA Tournament.

The good news is he has UNC in the field. The disappointing news? It’s in the eight-nine game. He has them as the No. 8 seed matched up with No. 9 Auburn. The two teams are in the South Region and are projected to face No. 1 Florida in the next round.

Ideally, the Tar Heels would have a better seed than that, which would mean a more successful regular season leading into the tournament. But much will change between now and Selection Sunday.
