Player Preview: Isaiah Denis Could be Poised for Breakout Sophomore Season at UNC

North Carolina’s 2026-27 roster is filled with newcomers, but the eighth installment of the annual Locked On Tar Heels basketball roster player preview series turns the spotlight toward one of the few players who already knows what it means to wear Carolina blue.

After previewing freshmen Maximo Adams, Sayon Keita, Malloy Smith and Kevin Thomas, followed by sophomores Matt Able, Neoklis Avdalas and Cade Bennerman, it is time for Isaiah Denis.

And Denis might be one of the most intriguing breakout candidates on Michael Malone’s first UNC team.

The Charlotte native returns for his sophomore season after appearing in just 10 games as a freshman and averaging 1.9 points in limited action. A finger injury helped derail his opportunity to establish a meaningful role, making his freshman statistics (including just 14 field-goal attempts and eight 3-point attempts) largely irrelevant when attempting to project what comes next.

There were, however, encouraging signs behind the scenes.

Former Tar Heel Tyler Zeller recently told Locked On Tar Heels that Denis was at times giving UNC’s starters problems while working with the scout team late last season. Jonathan Adams also pointed to the possibility of Denis becoming Carolina’s first guard off the bench, a role that could make him an important part of the Tar Heels’ rotation even without cracking the starting five.

Denis, who entered the transfer portal before ultimately choosing to return to Chapel Hill, now has a clearer pathway toward playing time. He will compete with veterans Angelo Brizzi and Jaydon Young for reserve backcourt minutes, but his offensive upside could separate him from that group.

The most obvious weapon is his shooting.

During the 2024 EYBL season, Denis ranked in the 92nd percentile on contested catch-and-shoot 3-pointers while connecting on 36 percent from beyond the arc on roughly six attempts per game. Adams described him as both a tough-shot taker and tough-shot maker with a smooth,…
