Jonathan Kuminga reaches 2-year, $13 million deal to join Timberwolves after split with Hawks

Jonathan Kuminga is headed to Minneapolis.

The Minnesot Timberwolves agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal to land Kuminga on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The move came after the Hawks officially declined Kuminga’s team option back in June, making him a free agent after his tumultuous exit with the Golden State Warriors last season.

Kuminga reportedly chose the Timberwolves over similar offers from the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers.

Kuminga was dealt to the Hawks ahead of the deadline last season in a deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Warriors. That ended what was a rough run for Kuminga in Golden State.

He reportedly requested a trade as soon as he was eligible to be dealt after being largely sidelined during the first half of the season. Kuminga, whom the Warriors selected with the No. 7 overall draft pick out of the G League in 2021, only appeared in 20 games for the franchise last season.

Kuminga ended up playing 16 games with the Hawks after that trade. He averaged 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest in Atlanta. The Hawks finished 46-36 and reached the playoffs for the first time under head coach Quin Snyder, but they were knocked out in the first round.

Kuminga had signed a two-year, $46.8 million deal with the Warriors ahead of the 2025-26 season with the potential out this summer.

The release of Kuminga arrives on the heels of multiple additions to Atlanta’s roster in recent weeks. Prior to the NBA Draft, the Hawks acquired forward Aaron Wiggins from the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for two second-round picks.

The Hawks then acquired Houston guard Kingston Flemings (Round 1, pick 8), St. John’s forward Zuby Ejiofor (Round 1, pick 23) and North Carolina forward/center Henri Veesaar (Round 2, pick 52) in last week’s draft.

Kuminga will join a Timberwolves group that went 49-33 last season and made the playoffs for a fifth straight time under head coach Chris Finch, though they were knocked out of the postseason in the conference semifinals. He will get to slide in alongside star Anthony Edwards and new point…
