Tyran Stokes Already Receiving National Player Of The Year Buzz Before Kansas Debut

The hype surrounding Tyran Stokes has followed him throughout his high school career. Before the five-star freshman has even played his first official game for Kansas, college basketball coaches are already suggesting he could become one of the best players in the country.

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander recently surveyed coaches on who they believe will be the best college basketball player during the 2026-27 season. Stokes received 5% of the vote, placing him fifth in the poll.

Florida’s Thomas Haugh led comfortably at 43%, followed by Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr. at 15%, Vanderbilt’s Tyler Tanner at 14% and Illinois’ David Mirkovic at 6%.

Stokes finished ahead of several notable names, including Duke’s John Blackwell, Texas Tech’s JT Toppin and former Kansas center Flory Bidunga, who is now at Louisville.

For a player who has yet to experience a minute of college basketball, appearing that high in a poll of coaches speaks to the expectations surrounding him.

Stokes arrives at Kansas with enormous expectations

Stokes enters Lawrence as the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class and is expected to immediately become one of the centerpieces of Bill Self’s revamped roster.

The 6-foot-8 wing put together a dominant senior season at Rainier Beach High School, averaging 31 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and four steals while helping lead his team to a Washington Class 3A state championship.

He also enters college with significant international experience. Stokes has won three gold medals representing the United States, doing so at the 2023 FIBA U16 Americas Championship, 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup and 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup.

CBS Sports noted that Stokes has an opportunity to become another one-and-done NBA prospect under Self, while also pointing out the difficult challenge he’ll face if he wants to contend for national player of the year honors.
