What Gonzaga Has in Javon Bennett, If It Has Him At All

As of right now, today, August 22, recent Gonzaga signee Javon Bennett isn’t eligible to play college basketball for the 2026-27 season. He was eligible on August 5, the day the Dayton transfer point guard committed to the Zags after two separate court rulings had given him a fifth season, but earlier this week, both rulings got put on hold. That’s thanks to the NCAA, which appealed both and won a pause on each while the appeals play out.

Neither pause settles anything, though. The Ohio appeal gets argued on September 22, six weeks before Gonzaga opens on November 2, so Bennett could be cleared in time. He could also still be waiting when the season starts.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the rest of the backcourt is no more settled. Donovan Dent, linked to Gonzaga for most of August, committed to LSU earlier this week, where he’ll join Will Wade’s ongoing project of building an SEC roster entirely out of guys awaiting eligibility rulings (Gonzaga fans can decide for themselves how much to mourn the Dent loss based on his willingness to go play for Will Wade as opposed to Mark Few). Gonzaga’s other reported target Florida transfer Xaivian Lee, cleared to play by the same California order Dent used, but still hasn’t announced where he hopes to play next season. Nathan De Sousa, Gonzaga’s point guard signee out of France is waiting on both an NCAA waiver and a travel visa. Three dudes: the two who’ve committed can’t play, and the one who can play hasn’t committed.

But none of this is up to Gonzaga. What is knowable is the player himself, so let’s start there.

Bennett committed to the Zags on August 5. He’s an undersized but skilled Swiss army knife point guard who led the Flyers in scoring, assists, and steals last season on his way to first-team All-Atlantic 10.
