Iowa State Reveals Severity of Killyan Toure Shoulder Injury

The Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball team has an unfortunate history of players suffering significant injuries at the least opportune times.

This past season, their NCAA tournament hopes were dashed minutes into March Madness when Joshua Jefferson suffered an ankle injury in their Round of 64 game against the Tennessee State Tigers.

Iowa State ended the 2025-26 season without one of their key contributors, and now they are going to begin the 2026-27 campaign without one. It was recently reported that sophomore point guard Killyan Toure suffered a shoulder injury, and the school has confirmed it and provided an update.

Unfortunately, it isn’t an overly positive one. According to a press release from the university, Toure underwent surgery on the morning of Aug. 21 for a right shoulder injury. He got hurt at Damian Lillard’s Formula Zero Elite Camp, where he was one of the top 15 college counselors.

“This is an unfortunate setback for Killyan,” Otzelberger said. “He has been an important part of our program and we’re looking forward to having him back for the second half of the season. Right now, our focus is on his health and recovery.”

According to the press release, a return to play is being targeted for January. That would put him on track to hopefully be ready to go when the Cyclones start their Big 12 schedule that month.

Navigating the non-conference schedule without Toure will have some challenges. He was expected to play a key role for the team once again as a starting guard, taking over as the lead point-of-attack defender from Tamin Lipsey.
