Comparing NCAA Hockey Programs to College Basketball Schools

College hockey is on the rise and is slowly creeping up on the other top sports across the country. Although they will never be as big as football and basketball, you can always draw some parallels to these programs.

It’s impossible to draw exact one-to-one comparisons, but there are some clear comparisons from school to school. From storied schools to yearly contenders and programs that recruit well but never seem to get it done, which basketball programs best align with hockey schools in Division I?

Michigan Hockey Vs Kentucky Basketball

This was the initial comparison that started this idea. Although Kentucky won it all in 2012, they still have similar profiles. They are both one of, if not the biggest, brands in their respective sport and attract a lot of the top recruits from the country. Since Kentucky’s last National title in 2012, they’ve been a top high-school recruiting team in the country, producing NBA players at a high rate, but they haven’t won anything in that time frame.

The same goes for the Wolverines, whose basketball counterparts just won the National Championship under now-Dallas Mavericks head coach Dusty May. Michigan gets a lot of the top recruits, with this next season being a great example as they landed the projected first-overall pick in the 2027 draft with Landon DuPont. They have five first-round picks and have the most current alumni in the NHL; the same goes for Kentucky. Minnesota Hockey vs Kansas Basketball

Minnesota hockey is the college hockey equivalent of Kansas basketball: a program whose success is tied deeply to the identity of the state. The Gophers have won five NCAA championships, made 23 Frozen Fours, and appeared in the NCAA Tournament a record 42 times.
