Insider names two teams to monitor for MSU basketball transfer Jaxon Kohler

An insider in the college basketball world has named a pair of teams to monitor in the battle for Michigan State transfer forward Jaxon Kohler.

Reports surfaced on Tuesday that Kohler will officially enter the transfer portal and pursue an opportunity at another school for his fifth and final year of college hoops. This was an expected route based on recent comments from Tom Izzo, and now that it’s official, there have been multiple reports on where he could land via the portal.

According to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, there are two teams to watch closely for Kohler: BYU and Kentucky. While Louisville and Kansas have also been linked to Kohler, Goodman stated that BYU is “frontrunner” as of Tuesday but that it’ll be interesting to see what other programs “can make up ground now that everyone is allowed to speak” with Kohler. One of the schools he noted to watch is Kentucky.

Kohler wrapped up his four-year career with the Spartans this past season, averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to help lead Michigan State to the Sweet 16. He was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft but played with the Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League.

It’ll be interesting to see if Kohler moves fast and makes a decision on his next school soon or extends this process to vet a number of opportunities. Either way, it’s clear he’ll have his pick of the litter and should end up in a great spot to wrap up his college career.
