Former Michigan State basketball star reportedly entering transfer portal

A former Spartans star is set to formally enter the transfer portal and find a new home for his final season of college hoops.

As many expected for weeks, Michigan State basketball forward Jaxon Kohler will enter the transfer portal in search of a new team for his fifth year of college basketball. Joe Tipton of On3 reported the news on Kohler on Tuesday. Kohler is one of numerous players expected to take advantage of a court injunction that will allow players in the class of 2022 to play a fifth year of college basketball this season.

Kohler wrapped up his four-year career with the Spartans this past season, averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to help lead Michigan State to the Sweet 16. He was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft but played with the Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League.

It appears the opportunity to return to Michigan State was never really considered by either parties as the Spartans had plans of moving forward with the roster they assembled before the court injunction. Izzo recently spoke about Michigan State being set with the roster they had built — which didn’t directly note Kohler couldn’t return but was a sign that he’d be exploring options outside of Michigan State.

At this time, it appears BYU is the frontrunner to land Kohler — who is from Utah. But there have been reports of Louisville, Kentucky and Kansas also being in the mix for him.
