The Field of 68 is a 24-hour basketball celebration meant to showcase the sport. Similar college basketball marathons have been held in the past, with ESPN once hosting the 24-Hour Tip-Off Marathon, mirroring the Field of 68’s idea. The ESPN version of the event was broadcast from 2008 through 2017.

Per Jeff Goodman, co-founder of the Field of 68, the move to bring back the 24-hour marathon was to give college basketball fans quality mid-major matchups to start the season.

“The schedule to open the college basketball season has been awful for years with the best teams in the country playing bottom-feeders, sometimes even non-D1 opponents. Fans wanted us to bring the 24-hour marathon back, and we wanted to create some of the best mid-major matchups in doing so.”

Grambling State faced struggles in Crarey’s first season with the team. They finished 14-19 overall and 7-11 in conference play. They managed a dominating 77-52 win over Mississippi Valley State to open up the SWAC men’s basketball tournament, but lost a narrow 68-65 matchup to Jackson State in the next round.

The matchup against Northern Illinois gives Grambling the opportunity to start the season off on a high note, with national exposure from being the only HBCU team part of the Field of 68’s 24-hour basketball marathon. The games will be broadcast on YouTube and X.
