Kansas men’s basketball lost one of its top future commitments Wednesday when four-star wing Javon Bardwell announced he is reclassifying to the 2026 recruiting class and reopening his recruitment.

The 6-foot-6 prospect from Harlem, New York, had been committed to the Jayhawks since Oct. 3 as a member of the 2027 class. While there had been speculation that Bardwell could accelerate his timeline and arrive in Lawrence a year early, his decision ultimately came with a decommitment rather than an early enrollment at Kansas.
In an announcement on Instagram, Bardwell thanked Bill Self and the Kansas coaching staff while making it clear that his decision was driven by changing circumstances rather than dissatisfaction with the program.
“This decision is not a reflection of the coaches at the University of Kansas,” Bardwell wrote. “To Coach Bill Self, Coach Tony Bland, and Coach Jeremy Case, I want to thank you for the relationship you built with my family and me from day one. My recruitment is now open as a member of the 2026 class.”
The move comes as programs across the country continue adjusting to the NCAA’s new five-year eligibility model. Because Bardwell was born on May 29, 2007, his five-year eligibility clock begins this fall regardless of when he enrolls in college. By moving into the 2026 recruiting class, he preserves the opportunity to utilize all five years of eligibility under the NCAA’s updated rules. Remaining in the 2027 class would have effectively limited him to four seasons of competition.

Kansas also finds itself in an unusual roster situation entering the 2026-27 season. The Jayhawks currently have two open scholarship spots while Bill Self has acknowledged the program continues to explore late roster additions.
“We’re still investigating different opportunities,” Self recently said when discussing whether Kansas’ roster is complete.
