As Celtics fans, we’re lucky to spend History Month reminiscing about our eighteen banners and privileged to honor the death of NBA visionary and Celtics champ Don Nelson.
However, this basketball tumbleweed was hard to ignore:
No, that’s not the son of Celtics superfan Bill Simmons. That’s the #1 pick of the 2016 NBA Draft Ben Simmons — and for what it’s worth, Jaylen Brown was selected by Boston at #3. Simmons was last seen with the Clippers after he was waived by the Nets in 2025. Now, here comes a series of big ifs: IF he’s truly healthy and IF he’s willing to play a role and IF everything goes well with his stint with the Australian national team, a Simmons comeback in the NBA could be possible.

It’s unknown if Brad Stevens and the front office are among those interested teams, but if he’s truly regained his athleticism — and maybe more importantly, his confidence — he might be worth a flyer with the team’s 15 roster spot still unfilled.

Simmons spent part of last year’s sabbatical become a professional sport fisherman and for the Celtics, hooking a potential buy-low candidate could be just what this confusing offseason needs.
