Much of the NBA’s summer business has been completed, which means we are free to grade each team’s list of transactions with our own offseason report card.
Here’s a look at how each team in our 2026-27 NBA season opener fared:
Miami Heat: B
The Heat landed two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo for a package centered around Tyler Herro, and that is an upgrade nobody can ignore. When paired with Bam Adebayo, Antetokounmpo should immediately form a top-10 defense in Miami, and Giannis has consistently been the engine of a top-flight offense, too.
But their projected starting lineup still features Andrew Wiggins, Davion Mitchell and Pelle Larson. In order to truly nail the offseason, the Heat had to make moves on the fringes, and so far Tim Hardaway Jr. is the only low-cost addition of any significance.
You still make the trade for Antetokounmpo, obviously, but he alone does not make a contender. The Heat need a number of dominoes to fall in order to truly compete for a championship, and executive Pat Riley may eventually start tipping the depth chart in their favor, but for now, at least, the lack of a rotation is what kept them from an A.
Minnesota Timberwolves: C
The Wolves certainly did a lot this summer, trading both Julius Randle and Naz Reid, reshaping a frontcourt that reached consecutive Western Conference finals, and committing instead to a backcourt partnership of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball.
It is a big bet on Ball, an oft-injured, one-time All-Star whose creativity as a performer is equal parts tantalizing and infuriating. Can he pull the kind of attention Minnesota wants to draw from Edwards on the offensive end and contribute to the sort of defensive effort the Wolves have grown accustomed to with Rudy Gobert at center?
Minnesota will be good, especially if Jaden McDaniels continues to ascend, but the Wolves have lost some of their depth, a little toughness and maybe an edge required to compete with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs atop the West.
