When people think of the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball program, they usually associate it with reaching Final Fours and contending for National Championships.
Well, those have not been present in recent memory, especially the last two seasons, as North Carolina has been bounced in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in consecutive campaigns. Meanwhile, North Carolina’s arch-rival, the Duke Blue Devils, have been consistently knocking on the door of a National Championship since Jon Scheyer took over as head coach.
Each program is entering the upcoming season with different viewpoints. Here is a breakdown of the expectations surrounding each program.

As noted, the Tar Heels have been eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons. That spurred the front office to orchestrate a coaching change, firing Hubert Davis and hiring Michael Malone.
The 54-year-old head coach arrived in Chapel Hill in the midst of the transfer portal window opening, putting North Carolina’s recruiting process behind the eight ball. Additionally, following a coaching change, North Carolina was unable to assemble a strong recruiting class, and several players from the previous regime departed the program via the transfer portal.
