Five-star power forward Marcus Spears Jr., who is one of the nation’s top prospects announced his commitment to the Longhorns on Thursday. He also revealed that he will reclassify from the 2027 recruiting class to 2026. The move allows the star to suit up for Sean Miller’s squad in the upcoming season.

Spears Jr. is the son of former NFL defensive end and ESPN analyst Marcus Spears. He chose Texas over other programs including Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, LSU and Arkansas.

College basketball insider Joe Tipton shared the news on X. While many Longhorns fans celebrated the addition, others questioned whether reclassifying so early was the right decision.

“Literally makes no sense,” one fan wrote.

“He’s not ready. If you seen them playing for that title a few months ago he was horrible,” another user commented.

Some fans took the opportunity to poke fun at Texas.

Despite the mixed reaction online, Spears Jr. made it clear on why he is excited about joining Sean Miller’s program.

“My relationship with Coach (Sean) Miller is really good,” Spears told Rivals. “He is recruiting me hard, so I’m just taking everything in. I know quite a bit about the basketball program. I went up there with Coach (Rodney) Terry and watched a game. I saw all the facilities and all the training facilities they have up there. And I saw what Coach Miller did last year. I’m interested to see what he does this year because he said he is going to change a little bit. So, I just want to see what they do.”
