Syracuse men’s basketball to open Gerry McNamara era against New Haven

The Gerry McNamara era will officially begin on Monday, November 2, inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Syracuse men’s basketball’s first regular-season game will be against the University of New Haven on the opening night of the season, the program announced on Thursday.

Syracuse has never played against New Haven, which will be playing its second Division I season. The Chargers went 14-17 last season, finishing 9-9 in the NEC under 15th year head coach Ted Hotaling.

The Orange now have nine reported non-conference games on the schedule, with officially announced dates for five of them. Syracuse’s season opener will once again come on the first day of the college basketball season, which has been the first Monday in November in each of the last five years.

Following the opener, SU will host another Connecticut-based NEC program, in Central Connecticut on Thursday, November 5, before travelling to Indianapolis to face Indiana at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Monday, November 9. Syracuse’s ACC/SEC Challenge matchup with Oklahoma in Norman will be on December 1, while the trip to Boston to face Providence will be on December 19.

Games against Lafayette (Nov. 21) and UAlbany at the Dome have also been reported. Syracuse will play against Rutgers at Barclays Center and St. John’s at Madison Square Garden, but the dates are not yet known. That leaves five spots for more non-conference games, which are likely to include Colgate and Cornell, as previously reported.

Syracuse will play three exhibition games. The Orange will face UConn at Mohegan Sun on October 13, and will also reportedly face Siena in Albany and Niagara in Buffalo (Oct. 24).

McNamara will be the second consecutive Syracuse head coach to open his tenure with a home game against a university with the initials “UNH.” SU defeated New Hampshire 83-72 in Adrian Autry’s first game on November 6, 2023.
