A year-by-year review of Kentucky basketball history: 1929-30 season

The early days of the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team were somewhat inconsistent. There were winning seasons, but coaches came and went, so there were a lot of roster resets. This resulted in plenty of change from year to year, and the results were unpredictable.

In 1927, after a 3-13 effort, John Mauer was hired to take over the program, and he had success in doing just that. His first season at the helm began a run of six decades during which they never had a losing record.

The 1929-30 season was a continuation of that. Mauer continued to maintain a level of performance that would become synonymous with Kentucky basketball. In fact, it would be their best season yet, though it would be Mauer’s last before a legend took control.

John Mauer’s swan song

Though the next Kentucky basketball coach would go on to be a legendary figure, it’s important to acknowledge Mauer’s contributions. He came in after a disastrous campaign, and immediately turned things around, setting the program on a winning path that would last for over 60 years. After the 1929-30 season, though, Mauer would take the head coaching job at Miami (OH), where he would stay for eight years. His tenure in Lexington was brief, but very important.

Plenty of returning faces

One of the things Mauer brought to Kentucky was stability with the roster. During his three years with the Wildcats, he was able to keep players around, helping to develop those players in his system, and it led to sustained success. In his final year, in fact, the top nine scorers from the previous year all returned.
