Former Wake Star Jeff Teague On Why Jon Scheyer Has Excelled As Duke’s Coach

Jeff Teague has never really struck us as a guy who cared much for Duke. And as a Wake Forest guy, in fairness, why should he? This is ACC 101: everyone hates Duke, and, to a lesser extent now, UNC.

But on this point, he’s fair. He talks about Jon Scheyer’s success at Duke and on his 520 Podcast, Teague said this about Duke’s young coach:

“I think he just has a really good rapport with the guys. Speaking to guys that play at Duke, they enjoy being around him. He’s easy to work with. But then he also has that new youth kind of coaching. Like, I can relate to you. I can get on the court and play with you. I can teach you things, and then you can see the things that I’ve learned because I can actually still show you when I get on the court.”

That’s probably about right. There’s a lot to be said for a lifetime of knowledge. If Mike Krzyzewski recruits you and talks to you about coaching Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, and Michael Jordan on the Dream Team, you’re going to pay attention.

As Teague points out, however, there is a lot to be said for being a young coach as well.
