Richard Pitino reveals Xavier basketball budget for upcoming season

Xavier University men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino testified on Wednesday that his team had a spending budget of “a little over $14 million” for the upcoming season.

Pitino, who was a witness at Wednesday’s Hamilton County Common Pleas Court hearing for college basketball players suing the NCAA over an additional year of eligibility, was asked about how much money the team received for the 2026-27 season. Though he initially declined to respond, Pitino was reminded by an attorney representing the NCAA that he was under oath, and said the amount.

Pitino also said Mike Nwoko, an incoming senior transfer from LSU, would be the highest-paid player on the 2026-27 roster.

Filip Borovicanin, a plaintiff in the lawsuit against the NCAA who played for Xavier in 2025-26, said he earned around $330,000 in Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) money during his senior season at Xavier.

The Enquirer previously reported in March that Xavier had around a $5.5 million NIL budget for the 2025-26 season, placing the program just below the Big East average. The Cincinnati Business Courier later reported in May the team tripled its budget for the upcoming season.
