The Purdue Boilermakers have become one of the most consistent programs in college basketball under head coach Matt Painter. They’re coming off yet another March Madness appearance and have made the NCAA Tournament 17 times in their 21 seasons with Painter.
His ability to ensure the Boilermakers are a contender year in and year out has made Purdue an attractive landing spot for high school recruits. That includes for class of 2028 center Erick Dampier Jr., out of Madison, Mississippi.

At 6-foot-9 and 230 pounds, he is a five-star recruit, the No. 2 center and the No. 4 player in the nation, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. His father, Erick Dampier, also spent 16 years in the NBA and was the Indiana Pacers’ No. 10 pick in the 1996 NBA Draft.

Purdue is one of the many teams that have already offered the big man. When speaking to Rivals’ Jamie Shaw, Dampier made it clear that the Boilermakers have already made a strong impression.

“Of course, they like to play with their bigs,” he said. “They throw the ball to them and play through them, and they shoot the most free throws. I mean, they are a good school to go to if you’re a big; they develop their bigs, too. A lot of people tell me that. They’re a pretty cool staff, we have a good relationship, and I like talking with them.”
As a sophomore at Madison-Ridgeland Academy, he appeared in 39 games, averaging 15.9 points, 13.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He also shot 70% from the field and converted 44% of his free throw attempts.
With strong numbers and high rankings, though, Purdue isn’t the only program in hot pursuit. He also holds offers from the Jackson State Tigers, San Diego Toreros and Mississippi State Bulldogs, which is his father’s alma mater.
