BYU’s social media department wasted little time in congratulating star forward AJ Dybantsa, who was selected by the Washington Wizards with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft on Tuesday night. The Cougars borrowed a line from one of the most successful and celebrated film franchises of the 21st Century.

“You’re a Wizard, AJ,” the BYU men’s basketball X account posted shortly after the life-changing news became official, referencing the classic exchange between Rubeus Hagrid and young Harry Potter in 2001’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” The Cougars completed the meme by imitating Dybantsa’s response. “I’m a what?”

The 19-year-old native of Brockton, Massachusetts is indeed joining the Wizards, and he will need to unleash plenty of magic in order to revive one of the league’s most embattled franchises. Dybantsa will have help, to be sure — established stars Anthony Davis and Trae Young could make a big difference in their first full season in Washington — but this incoming rookie is supposed to be the most important long-term member of this team.

BYU is proud to claim Dybantsa as one of its own. He led the NCAA in scoring as just a freshman, averaging 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 51.0 percent from the field and 33.1 percent from 3-point range.

Harry Potter had yet to really tap into his potential when Hagrid informed him of his special gifts. AJ Dybantsa is already aware of what he can accomplish if he stays the course and hones his 3-point shooting. Washington clearly believes this teenager is “The Chosen One,” the man who can finally bring honor back to the Wizards.
