Syracuse men’s basketball: are we dealing with Meganumerophobia?

Last week the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball program announced the numbers that the 26-27 squad will be wearing when they take the court.

If you don’t want to scroll through the IG post, here they are:

0 – Moesch
1 – White
2 – Butler
3 – Dual
4 – Doty
5 – Goodrick
6 – Russell
7 – Anthony
10 – Siby
11 – Folefac
12 – Mahmutovic
13 – Martinez
23 – Wilson
24 – Lobdell
25 – Tobiason

So we’ve got a lot of low numbers. A bit unusual but you know kids these days and all that…..but maybe this group is buying into a new staff philosophy. Does the aversion to high numbers come from the program’s emphasis on grit and determination over flash?

Or….do we think this Orange team has a collective fear of high numbers, or Meganumerophobia? We know that no one’s going to put on the 44 jersey, but with restrictions on basketball numbers removed, no one’s going above 25?

We don’t have a Buddy Boeheim fan who wants 35? Four guys with CNY ties and none of them want that number…shame.

No one’s coming back like Jordan wearin the 4-5?

We’re going to have to send out the TNIAAM investigative team to dig into this story before the season begins. We hope the Meganumerophobia is limited to uniform numbers, points allowed and turnovers and doesn’t carry into other categories like points scored or free throw percentage.
