Darian DeVries first season as the head coach of Indiana men’s basketball ended in disappointment when the Hoosiers were left out of the NCAA Tournament field on Selection Sunday. A late season collapse full of blowout losses doomed Indiana’s postseason hopes after a brief stretch of quality play.‘
With the program facing another transfer portal heavy rebuild heading into the 2026-27 season, there wasn’t much reason for optimism in the first few weeks of the offseason. Why should fans expect any different given similar circumstances?

But DeVries had just that in mind: different.
His first roster? Loaded with talent from the mid-major level with every major contributor exhausting their eligibility that emphasized shooting and small ball. His second? All six of Indiana’s portal signings are from the high major level, come with additional years of eligibility and two could make up one of the larger frontcourts in the country next season. All committed within just over a week of the portal opening.
Fans, in response, are significantly more optimistic than they were when the 2025-26 season ended, according to the results of our Reacts Survey:
A majority of fans surveyed, or 63%, responded they were optimistic for the season while 25% said they were very optimistic. Just 2% of respondents selected “not at all optimistic.”
