Mizzou Hoops Player Review: Sebastian Mack

On the list of things Mizzou Basketball was counting on going into the season was the impact of UCLA transfer Sebastian Mack.

Mack had averaged 12.1 points per game as a freshman at UCLA, and then 9.6 points per game as a sophomore, but he struggled to find a consistent role in year 2. So he went portaling and landed at Missouri. With the Tigers he figured to complement Anthony Robinson at guard and provide another player who could attack the rim and get to the free throw line.

The thought process was clear enough. And things started out well enough. Mack started the first 9 games alongside Robinson. He scored double figures in 6 of the 9 games, and while his outside shooting didn’t have the juice Mizzou hoped, he was still productive. But he wasn’t always efficient, and he struggled defensively.

So his playing time yo-yo’d a bit. As an example, Mack played 26 minutes against Illinois but was only inserted into the game once things were getting out of hand. And he only played 7 minutes against Notre Dame, which was Mizzou’s first real challenge of the season. The next game he was removed from the starting lineup and only saw 11 minutes against Kansas, after missing the first 25 minutes of the game and the Tigers were down 17 points.

That trend continued, and then when Florida marched into Columbia (to take a big fat L) Mack saw the floor twice in two separate stints, but a costly turnover ended the first half stint and he was largely forgettable in the second half.

He played just 28 minutes during the conference schedule. and scored just 8 points. Mack went from possibly the most important addition of the offseason to the guy buried on the bench.

So it was no surprise when Mack entered the transfer portal after the season. And it took until just the other day for him to find his landing spot, at UNLV.

Landing at UNLV will be a good place for Mack. With the Tigers he was forced into a situation where the strengths of his game were stripped away…
