76ers reportedly hiring Cavs GM Mike Gansey as president of basketball operations

The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly found their new president of basketbal operations. The team has agreed to a deal to bring Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey into that role, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Gansey will replace Daryl Morey, who was fired by the 76ers earlier this month after six years with the franchise. Philadelphia made the move after another disappointing, injury-fueled season ended with a 24-58 record.

The team opted to retain head coach Nick Nurse. Bob Myers, the former GM of the Golden State Warriors who now works as president of sports for the 76ers’ parent company, headed up the search for Morey’s replacement, and landed on Gansey.

Gansey has been with the Cavaliers’ front office since 2011, moving up the ranks. He earned the G League’s Executive of the Year award in 2017 while serving as GM of Cavs’ affiliate Canton Charge, and became assistant general manager under Koby Altman shortly afterwards.

In 2022, when Altman was promoted to Cleveland’s president of basketball operations, he appointed Gansey as the team’s new GM. Together, the two of them guided the Cavaliers through the post-LeBron James era and turned them into real contenders in the East. In the four years since Altman and Gansey were promoted, Cleveland made the playoffs four times and won four of eight total postseason series.

Now, Gansey will join the Sixers’ front office with the hopes of turning things around again. While Philadelphia certainly has some bright spots — Tyrese Maxey finished fifth in the league in points per game, and rookie VJ Edgecomb has the makings of a future star — injuries to star center Joel Embiid and semi-recent acquisition Paul George have stifled the team’s potential.
