UVA men’s basketball adds Old Dominion to its 2026-27 nonconference schedule

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball program will renew an in-state rivalry next season that had been dormant since 2012. The ’Hoos will take on the Old Dominion Monarchs on Tuesday, November 17th, as part of their 2026-27 nonconference schedule, college basketball analyst Rocco Miller reported on Wednesday morning.

The Cavaliers are 9-5 all-time against the Monarchs, but the two Commonwealth of Virginia programs haven’t squared off since December 22nd, 2012, when ODU shocked the ’Hoos, 63-61, at the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic inside the Richmond Coliseum. Joe Harris led Virginia with 18 points in the contest, while Old Dominion’s Dimitri Batten poured in a game-high 23 points off the bench to lead the Monarchs to the upset victory.

Since their last meeting in 2012, ODU has made one NCAA Tournament appearance (earning a 14-seed in 2019 before falling to Purdue in the Round of 64) and switched conferences twice, leaving the CAA for Conference USA in 2012 before accepting an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference in 2021. The Monarchs, who are led by head coach Mike Jones, are coming off an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign in which they finished just 12-21 overall and 7-11 in the Sun Belt.

The matchup with Old Dominion will mark just the third time Virginia has squared off with an in-state nonconference opponent since falling to James Madison in Harrisonburg, 52-49, in December of 2021. The ’Hoos got their revenge on the Dukes in December of 2022 inside John Paul Jones Arena, 55-50, and Virginia bested the Hampton Pirates, 91-53, in a November meeting in Charlottesville this past season.

With another reported matchup on the schedule in the form of the Monarchs, Virginia’s 2026-27 nonconference slate is beginning to round into shape.
