Kentucky basketball fans are brainstorming ways to push Mark Pope’s program back to the top of college basketball, and one idea really stood out.

In a lengthy post on On3 one Kentucky supporter argued that Pope and the Wildcats are fighting for wrong players in the modern college basketball era.
Instead of relying heavily on the transfer portal and traditional five-star recruits, the fan suggested Kentucky should aggressively target overseas talent by hiring a respected European basketball figure such as Ettore Messina.
Messina is one of the most decorated coaches in European basketball history, who currently coaches Olimpia Milano and previously worked with the San Antonio Spurs under Gregg Popovich.

According to the fan’s proposal, adding someone with Messina’s resume would instantly give Kentucky credibility in international recruiting circles.
“The next frontier is the International Pipeline. If we hired a guy like Messina, we aren’t just getting an assistant, we are opening a door to a talent pool that the rest of the SEC has barely touched. It would turn Kentucky into a “Global Academy” that bypasses the portal chaos entirely and could be a move to bring us back to the prominence we once had.
